Candidate for Election to the General Synod
I am standing for election to the General Synod because I
believe the Church of England continues to have a significant
role in our nation. I want to see a Church that is focused on
Jesus, able to stand in Unity, without compromising on Biblical
Teaching.
About me
I grew up in church and was baptised at the age of 16 in an Anglican Church that was
part of a Local Ecumenical Partnership. I have gone on to worship in a variety of
churches – URC, Vineyard, Pentecostal, New Frontiers and Baptist - before arriving back
to an Anglican Church.
I have chosen to live with my family in multicultural Balsall Heath for the last 25 years or
so. I have four children, with the youngest just reaching secondary school age. My wife
and I are associate members of a mission’s organisation. Over our time in Balsall Heath
we have sought to work with others to improve the area. We also have desired to share
our faith.
Within the church I currently serve on the children’s team, building team and the PCC.
This has continued similar roles I have undertaken in other churches over my life.
I work four days a week as a civil servant where I lead a team focused on improving the
outcomes provided by the companies we regulate. I cut down to four days to spend the
other day focused in the community. Until recently I used that time to be a debt advisor.
I am now considering changing direction and helping people with addictions.
I have reached a stage in life, both in respects to my career and home life, where I am
able to set aside time to give the matters that arise at Synod the consideration and
prayer they require.
What I believe
• The Bible remains God's authoritative Word and the foundation for our faith,
doctrine, and practice.
• Jesus, fully God and fully Man, died for our sins and God wants all people to
come to know him.
• God raised Jesus from the dead and demonstrates his Grace in raising us up in
Him.
• God continues to work out His plans and equips His people with His Holy Spirit.
• All Christians must work together to love and serve Jesus.
• Prayer, worship, and dependence upon God must remain at the heart of our lives.
• We are to love all people, shining as lights in jars of clay.
How I would act if elected to General Synod
If elected to General Synod, I would seek to serve prayerfully, faithfully and
constructively, approaching every issue through the lens of Scripture.
I would be a strong advocate for the local church, recognising that parish churches are
at the heart of the Church of England's ministry and witness. I would support initiatives
that strengthen evangelism, serve the most vulnerable, encourage discipleship for all
ages and develop both lay and ordained leadership.
I would seek to contribute positively to Synod's work by building relationships,
encouraging unity in Christ, and focusing on those things that help the Church fulfil its
calling. I would listen carefully to the diverse voices within the Church of England and
seek to engage graciously and respectfully with those who hold different views.
My desire is to see a Church that is faithful to God's Word, empowered by His Spirit, and
committed to making disciples of Jesus Christ. As Scripture reminds us, we are "jars of
clay". My prayer is that the Church of England will shine as a light in our nation, so that
the glory may be God's and not our own.
