About Me

I am married to Sally and we have 3 adult sons
•
We moved from London to Newcastle in 2003 in search of a better work-life
balance in my role as a shipping lawyer, and haven’t looked back
•
We attend Jesmond Parish Church where I have been involved in teaching
children’s groups, leading a home group, and serving on the mission committee
•
I have served on the Newcastle Deanery Synod for the past year which has given
me the opportunity to listen to and learn from Christians from across the
different traditions of our diocese
•
The Church of England has been part of my family story for generations: my
father, grandfather and great-grandfather were all Church of England ministers in
rural and urban parishes; my father was initially disappointed when I chose a
career in law! He came to see that I try to live out my faith at the office as well as
elsewhere

My Experience

•
Although immersed in the Church of England throughout my life, Christian faith
is for me a personal trust in Jesus Christ. I often tell people that I am not a
Christian because I think I am good but because I know I am not. Following Jesus
shapes how I seek to live my life every day of the week, and not just on Sundays
•
My Church of England heritage has given me a deep appreciation of the parish as
a Christian presence in communities, both rural and urban, and of the
remarkable opportunities the Church of England still has to bring the good news
of Jesus Christ to people across our nation
•
My own church tradition is Evangelical. I believe that the Church flourishes as we
remain faithful to Jesus Christ, attentive to the Scriptures and confident in the
historic Christian faith entrusted to us. At the same time, I value the breadth of
the Church of England and want to listen carefully and work graciously with
Christians from traditions different from my own. That was one of the reasons I
stood for Deanery Synod, and I would bring the same approach to General Synod
•
My professional life as a lawyer has also taught me the importance of listening
carefully, understanding different arguments, handling complex questions and
disagreeing courteously. I hope those are skills I could bring to the work of Synod

Priorities for the Next Five Years

If elected, I would particularly want to encourage the Church of England:
•
to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ confidently, so that people in every parish
and community have the opportunity to hear of Him and come to know Him
•
to make and equip disciples, helping Christians to grow in their knowledge of
God and to live faithfully for Christ in their homes, workplaces and communities
•
to remain faithful to Scripture and the historic Christian faith, especially as we
wrestle with difficult questions about the Church's life, doctrine and witness;
•
to seek unity with both truth and grace within the Church of England, listening
carefully to one another and treating those with whom we disagree with
generosity and respect
•
to have a generous vision for mission, both here in our own communities and
throughout the world, particularly where in places where there is little
opportunity to hear the good news of Jesus.

I would be grateful for the opportunity to serve our diocese on General Synod: listening
to the concerns of clergy and laity across Newcastle Diocese, contributing from my own
convictions and experience, and seeking the good of the whole Church of England.
