My name is Auriol Britton. I am a singer, pianist, writer, poet, spoken-word actor and
very part-time artist! I also carry out disability medical-training on an occasional basis
with students at the University of Bristol.
I began my Christian journey in the Methodist Church, at Sunday school. I have been a
member of the Church-of-England for nearly thirty-five years. I read Theology-and-
Religious-Studies at the University of Bristol, 1995-98, where I learned about Christian
history and other faiths, graduating with a 2/1. I have been a committed fundraiser for
Christian Aid for over twenty years, notably by carrying out a round of carol-signing every
December in towns and stations, and I have undertaken other fundraisers for the
organization, notably a memorised recitation of A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens,
in 2012. I was involved with church-music for many years. Between 2012 and 2014, I
organized three events to do with disability-awareness and training, in churches,
ecumenically. I worship at St Mary Redcliffe, where I do the following duties, from time
to time: being on-the-door, welcoming after services, delivering readings and prayers of
intercession. I have been on Diocesan Synod since 2015, and play an active part in
decision-making as a trustee of SMR.
If elected to the General Synod’s House-of-Laity, I would champion lay-participation at
all levels, campaigning for greater ease of involvement, encouraging as many lay-people
as possible to participate in governance.
I would be an advocate for people with disabilities, in the Church.
I am very much in favour of diversity and emancipation of all people in the Church. I
have progressive values, supporting same-gender blessings, and showing love towards
inclusion of all people, but I combine this forward-thinking approach with an
evangelical Christian faith, with the love of God and his son Jesus Christ at its heart. I
want to see everyone fairly represented on General Synod, both those with more-
conservative and those with more-liberal views, a Church in which everyone can live
happily together, moving on with greater harmony and unity from the divisions which
have too often been synonymous with the Anglican Communion in recent years.
