In Summary I will:

Promote a Christian presence in every community with the parish-based system at its heart

Support and encourage the C of E in their 3 priorities of being a church of missionary disciples, a
church where mixed ecology is the norm, and a church that is younger and more diverse

Prioritise a positive mission based outward-looking agenda for the C of E

Stand for unity and the revitalisation of the Church

Be a positive voice for the rich and diverse area of Portsmouth Diocese

Approach the role prayerfully and with a Jesus-centred, Kingdom seeking heart
I may be a good candidate because of my:

5 years of experience on General Synod where I have spoken in debates, stood to speak in
debates, sat on the Mission & Public Affairs Committee, and made many helpful relationships
across the Synod and with national officers which has directly benefitted Portsmouth Diocese
missionally and financially – don’t vote me off now, I’m only just getting the hang of it!

Role as Director of Ministry and Discipleship for Portsmouth Diocese. This gives me relationships
with people and insight across the diocese from a range of churches and traditions. I understand
something of the unique challenges and opportunities for rural, urban, island and town ministry and
mission and can represent you

Understanding and sympathy for the traditional parish setup which I long to see flourish, coupled
with a lot of experience of some innovative and courageous mixed ecology mission

Passion to see the welcome and invitation of Jesus Christ made known across our nation to people
of all backgrounds and experiences, as we continue to build a flourishing Christian presence in

Family & Interests
I have been married to Miriam since 2002 and we live in Portsmouth. We are just becoming empty nesters
with our three gloriously ginger daughters living and studying mostly in Bristol, Manchester and Cambridge.
I am a lifelong fan of Brighton & Hove Albion and suffer from uncontrollable spouting of football stats. I love
food, walking, cycling, running, being with friends and all things Pompey.
Focus on Work in Portsmouth Diocese and why that may be helpful
Director of Ministry & Discipleship 2024-present & Mission Development Officer 2017 – 2020. In this
time, I have immersed myself in the parishes and have been delighted to get to know many leaders,
congregations and churches across the traditions in the diocese. The team I lead is responsible for
implementing the diocese’s vision and strategy, raising and supporting lay and ordained vocations, training
of our curates and readers, clergy wellbeing and their continued ministerial development, parish vision
planning, revitalisation, mission, evangelism, Children, Youth and Families support and training, and the
development of new worshipping communities from new services to large church plants. This gives me a
great deal of all round knowledge and experience, broadening where I can contribute.
In this time, a desire has grown in me to see all traditions flourishing across the Church of England giving
the most dynamic and diverse invitation to a life of faith in Jesus Christ across the nation. I also have
gained plenty of insight into the national church where I often represent Portsmouth Diocese forming a
range of helpful relationships and networks nationally that benefit Portsmouth Diocese. This year I have
been awarded a place on SMMIB (the Strategic Ministry & Mission Investment Board) of the C of E.
Associate Leader of Harbour Church & Priest-in-charge of All Saints Portsea – 2020-24. I had the
great opportunity of simultaneous involvement in both the tried and tested and the new in the Church of
England. It was a privilege to work amongst and be involved in one of the poorest parishes in the country.
Alongside others, some of our work included, outreach to the homeless and vulnerable, work with women
in the sex industry and those experiencing gender-based violence, children and families, youth, students,
prisons, providing food banks, support for relationships and the Alpha Course.
Why General Synod?
In addition to my opening bullet points I would like to serve on General Synod to be part of the national
effort to help build unity and consensus where possible, seeking peace in all situations, contributing
thoughtfully and prayerfully to developing the legislative policies and actions of the national church.
I am keen to continue in listening, learning and helping the church to find ways forward which will be
needed for some core work of this term’s Synod. This will include looking at how investment funds are used
and apportioned, safeguarding structures in response to the Makin review, raising and paying for vocations,
continued work on sexuality, renewing trust between the laity, clergy, Bishops and the NCIs, our response
in bringing peace to a divided nation, providing hope in a cost of living crisis and deeply embedded poverty
and inequality, and the rise in Christian nationalism.
Hopefully my experience of working strategically at diocesan level and on the ground in parish settings will
be complementary in contributing to the work of the above.
Above all I would like to contribute to a positive life-giving agenda that keeps making the worship of
Jesus Christ and making Him known to all in our nation, regardless of background or experience, at
the centre of the Synod’s agenda and life of our church. I will use the Anglican tenets of Scripture,
Reason and Tradition, empowered by the Holy Spirit, as a solid base to guide us in this.
