Hello,
I’m Becky. It has been an honour to serve on General Synod
for the past five years. I am now asking for your first
preference vote so I can continue using my experience to
represent parishioners from our diocese in that forum.
I know St Albans diocese well, having come to the Abbey in
2001 as what is now called an intern. Since then, I have been
actively involved at St Stephen’s & St Julian’s (St Albans), St
Etheldreda’s (Hatfield) and St Nicholas’ (Barton-le-Clay). I am
now based at St Peter’s & St Paul’s in Flitwick.
About me
I grew up in a village in Sussex, where I belonged to the
church choir and youth group. I was even on the PCC as a
teenager! In my third year at university I studied music in
France and attended a church served by the Mission to
Seafarers. This has given me a wider view of church life and
service in the Diocese in Europe.
After my degree, I trained as a music teacher but later took a
break to take an MA in English Cathedral Music. During this
time I felt a call to explore my vocation and subsequently
came to St Albans. I was licensed as a Reader in 2013.
I now live in Barton-le-Clay with my husband and teenage
son. I have recently been appointed as a diocesan disability
adviser, due to my experience of long-Covid and autism. I
work as Director of Music at Flitwick Church and write music
for ordinary parishes for my website PsalteryAndHarp.uk. In
my spare time I embroider and knit.
Faith and Calling
“God is love, and those who live in love, live in God and
God lives in them.” (1 John 4.16) This verse encapsulates my
faith. Since my teens, I have felt called to church work that
helps people understand the love of God for all people. I do
this mainly through preaching and teaching, as well through
planning and directing liturgical music for worship. My current
focus is on inclusion and social justice for disabled and
neurodivergent people and I have recently spoken at General
Synod on specialist education for autistic pupils.

A Sustaining and Sustainable Church
If the Church of England is to sustain people in the Christian
faith – as it has over the centuries – we must ensure it has a
sustainable future. In my view, the most pressing issues are:
Sustaining Parish Ministry
I agree with Save the Parish on the need to reform the Mission
and Pastoral measure governing parish reorganisation, and
that the wellbeing of those engaged in active ministry (whether
clergy or lay, paid or unpaid) is paramount.
I also think that the Church Commissioners’ funds should be
used primarily to support parish ministry, particularly in poorer
areas. I would like to explore ways additional funding could be
used to relieve clergy of essential tasks that fall on them when
volunteers cannot be found. This would free-up clergy to focus
on their priestly ministry.
With April’s Ministry Statistics showing 30% of paid parish
clergy are likely to retire within the next 5 years, and that 50%
of all active clergy (including those who are retired but still
‘helping out’) are over 65, we urgently need to find creative
solutions to ensure all communities benefit from pastoral and
sacramental parish ministry.
Inclusion, Equality and Safeguarding
The impending shortage of priests also makes the removal of
unnecessary barriers to ordination urgent. All who are called
should be enabled to serve in whatever role suits their God-
given talents and capabilities. I therefore remain committed
to equality for everyone, at all levels and roles within the
church, regardless of disability, economic power, ethnicity,
sex, gender identity, learning disability, mental health,
neurodiversity or sexuality. I also believe we should value
the contribution of people of all ages, recognising that adults
and children can learn much from each other.
It is important that everyone is safe at church. Progress is
being made on safeguarding and this must continue rapidly.
Creation Care
As this summer’s record heat has shown, climate change
remains the biggest challenge facing God’s creation. I believe
the church should lead by example and continue pressing
for more climate action from government and others.
Why vote for me?
• I know our diocese well,
having lived in towns and
villages in Hertfordshire
and Bedfordshire.
• I know the challenges of
parish life, both rural and
urban.
• I have experience of the
wider church and value
Church history & liturgy.
• I understand how General
Synod works and take my
responsibility to report to
deaneries seriously.
• I am happy to hear from
those I represent and I
always try to respond.
