Candidate for General Synod

I am standing to continue serving on General Synod. I am
being proposed by Rev Lindiwe Maseko (vicar of St.
John’s Kingston) and seconded by Rev Marcus Gibbs
(vicar of Ascension Balham).
I was one of the clergy team from our diocese on
General Synod for the whole of the last quinquennium
(2021-26). I was one of only two of the seven clergy who
remained in post for the duration of the five years.
This photo is taken near to the University of York where
the July sessions of General Synod take place. Each year,
I take time to go on a prayer walk and pray for the future
of the Church of England sitting under this flourishing tree. My prayer is that, like this tree,
we would see the Church of England flourishing. This will come with deep roots in Jesus
and branches stretching out wide into the community, as we look to provide a sheltering
canopy for anyone and everyone as we share the good news of Jesus across our nation
and see the church renewed for mission in society.
Our clergy and people need to have confidence that the central legislative bodies of the
Church of England are committed to supporting and resourcing parishes for ministry and
mission. If elected, I will seek to keep the front-line mission and ministry of the local
church as the Synod’s main focus.

Who am I?
I am a flawed yet wholehearted disciple of Jesus Christ. I am married to Susannah,
and we have four children: Daisy (20), Boaz (19), Hope (12) and Theo (10). For the last
eleven years, I have had the privilege of serving as both the Rector of Holy Trinity
Clapham, the first resourcing church in Southwark diocese and a church with an
electoral roll over 600, and as the Priest in Charge of All Saints Clapham Park, a
smaller church just behind Brixton prison with an electoral roll under 50.

My focus on General Synod
Parishes flourishing: I hope that my long term experience of leading both a resourcing church (Holy Trinity
Clapham) and a small-sized church (All Saints, Clapham Park), as well as sending out church plants from
HTC, will continue to be helpful in discussions at Synod. I believe we must focus on revitalising and
growing worshipping congregations in parishes across this nation. I have spoken about my experience
of this in Synod debates.
I share much of the frustration of the Save the Parish movement with the frontline cuts, the creation of
mega-parishes and the abandonment of the poor. There needs to be a reduction in centralised costs to
allow for a focus on frontline ministry in parishes up and down the country. If we are going to see parishes
flourishing, we also need an increased pipeline of theologically-trained ordained leaders with a passion
for sharing Jesus and loving people.
The Church of England flourishing: I am one of the seven directors of the Alliance which is a network of
networks within the Church of England committed to our Anglican heritage of faith, holding to the received
teaching of the Church of England. We set up the Alliance in 2023 in response to the trajectory that the
Living in Love and Faith process was heading in. The Alliance has over 2000 clergy supporters. As one of the
Alliance directors, I have met with the lead Bishops of the Programme Board of the Living in Love and
Faith process and the LLF team regularly over the last quinquennium to help represent all the networks
within the Alliance.
I am deeply conscious of the pain and sensitivities in the life of the Church of England brought about by this
prolonged debate, recognising it affects those from every perspective. I want to continue to play a part in
working towards a solution that sees the Church of England flourishing - helping ensure a sustainable
platform at the heart of the Church of England from which we can continue to serve our nation through
evangelism, mission and church revitalisation, and so pass on the legacy of the faith we have inherited to
future generations. I share the concerns expressed by many across the spectrum of views that the new
initiatives and bodies being proposed by the House of Bishops could mean going through the LLF journey
again, risking similar results and ever deeper pain across the Church.
Christians flourishing: I serve in a church with an inspiring past. Holy Trinity Clapham was at the forefront
of the abolition of the slave trade through the work of William Wilberforce and others who worshipped at
HTC. Wilberforce’s example is so needed and relevant today – and primarily the reason for this is his
integrity as a follower of Jesus.
This year we celebrated our 250th Birthday as a church, and I published a book entitled “The Integrity Fix”.
The premise of the book is that we don’t all have the gifts or sphere of influence that William Wilberforce did,
but every follower of Jesus is qualified to live a life of integrity in response to the grace of God, just as
Wilberforce did. It is this that has the biggest impact on helping each person flourish for Christ in life, and it
is this that will bring about revival in our nation. I am passionate to see Christians flourishing in their faith,
and want to help encourage fruitful discipleship across the Church of England.

I have been very grateful for Jago’s service as one of Southwark’s clergy representatives
on General Synod over the last five years. His heart for Jesus and passion to see parishes
flourish are qualities I greatly value. He is someone I trust to speak clearly and
courageously and to keep mission and the life of the local church firmly in view.
