Dear Elector,
I am asking for your vote to be able to represent the laity of the Diocese of York at General
Synod.

York has been my home for 12 years and I worship at All Saints’ Church, North Street in the city
centre, where I am a member of the serving team. I am active on the PCC and I have served on
Deanery Synod since 2017. I have also been on Diocesan Synod and I served in the Deanery
Leadership Team for three years as Deanery Secretary. I love the Church because there we meet
Christ and receive God’s grace. I have decided to stand for General Synod to speak up for the
church at the grassroots, to offer my perspective and experience to address the various
opportunities and challenges facing the Church.

I was lucky enough to grow up in a churchgoing household. As a student, I worked in ecumenical
chaplaincy in Manchester. This was a hugely formational year that showed me the joy of sharing
in a diverse global faith. I have been a member of the international
Anglican-Lutheran Society for over ten years, having learned
about Lutheran Christianity as a student of German.

My career has spanned health, housing and adult social care. I
currently work for a local authority in West Yorkshire, where I
work with social care providers in quality assurance. The ethos of
my work is based on care and support built around the wellbeing
of the individual, promoting a culture of improvement in services
that benefits people and their communities. My work equips me
with skills in listening, team playing, negotiating and problem
solving, plus experience of working in urban and rural settings
with people from the broadest range of backgrounds. I offer these
skills as I stand for election.

When not at work or church, I enjoy cooking, music, theatre, swimming, cycling and the outdoors
(in fair weather!).

My Priorities
An Open and Generous Church
Christ calls everyone around His table; we live the Gospel message of hope when our
communities are welcoming and hospitable, putting aside our difficulties and differences. In the
same spirit of generosity, I believe General Synod needs to find a way forward to affirm same-sex
relationships while respecting theological differences around the Church.

I fully support women’s ordained ministry within the Church.

My parish, like many others, has seen growth in young adults
seeking baptism and confirmation in recent years. General Synod
needs to play its part in discerning where the Spirit is moving in
this area, to better equip parishes to support young people’s
formation in the Christian faith.

An Accountable Church
I work closely with safeguarding practitioners in my professional
life. I understand the importance of ensuring victims’ and
survivors’ voices are listened to. Synod must ensure the Church identifies learning from concerns
early and clearly, monitoring progress on actions taken. Safeguarding training for parishes needs
to be robust but proportionate.

Parish Focus
Parish communities are best placed to understand their local mission and are the most valuable
asset to reach people not yet connected with church. Central funding needs to prioritise well-
trained ordained and licensed lay ministry in our parishes. Funding for mission should be based
primarily on priorities identified by parishes and deaneries.

Parish communities have come together through initiatives such as renewable energy transition
and Eco-Church. Resources for parishes should also be joined up with the Church’s Environment
Programme, which is due for renewal during the next Synod quinquennium.

Ecumenical Outlook
General Synod needs to use its oversight to embrace the changing landscape of local ecumenical
relations and speak up for their value, to help parishes and deaneries nurture or rekindle these
relationships in a spirit of shared Christian faith and mission.

My Commitment
If you elect me, I will commit to:
• Listen to and engage with different voices across the Synod;
• Collaborate with other representatives to report back to deaneries and the diocese;
• Respond to contacts from lay people around York Diocese. If elected, I will be a member
of General Synod on behalf of you.
